What you will do

• Build and manage a diverse team of 5-7 engineers focused on search ranking, query understanding, and search UX.
• Recruit, coach, and develop engineers, ensuring regular feedback and career growth.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to set team direction and improve search quality and relevance.
• Plan and prioritize work balancing reliability and long-term improvements.
• Maintain high-quality standards for search reliability, latency, and relevance metrics.
• Drive project execution using data-driven decision making and foster experimentation practices.

Requirements

• Location: Must work from office on Mondays and Thursdays (Anchor Days) in San Francisco or New York.
• 2+ years managing engineering teams in search, ranking, or relevance.
• Deep understanding of search quality, ranking algorithms, and experimentation methodologies.
• Experience with AI-powered search including embedding models, hybrid search architectures, and LLM integration.
• Strong team leadership skills fostering collaboration, empowerment, and direct communication.
• High tolerance for ambiguity and change with passion for line management.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI connectors, enterprise search, or multi-source search systems.
• Experience building retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) features or LLM-powered search capabilities.
• Experience managing experimentation and A/B testing frameworks for search.
• Experience managing teams at startups during rapid growth.
• Experience rolling out engineering and management practices like code reviews and performance reviews.
