Staff Engineer - Terminal Software (Embedded Software)

Location: Carlsbad, California, United States or Germantown, Maryland, United States

Salary: $165,000–$260,500 annually; $205,000–$307,000 annually for specific locations in San Jose, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the New York City metropolitan area.

What you will do

• Drive software architecture and technical direction across embedded software teams and product lines.
• Define shared platform capabilities, frameworks, and reusable components for satellite terminal software.
• Lead the design, development, testing, delivery, and modernization of embedded software.
• Guide architectural reviews, technical decisions, engineering practices, and strategic technical investments.
• Mentor engineers through technical coaching, code reviews, architecture discussions, and knowledge sharing.
• Collaborate with systems, hardware, product, and program teams; support planning, estimation, risk assessment, and execution.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Hands-on embedded software design and development experience using C, C++, and/or Rust.
• Track record of delivering complex software products and providing technical leadership across multiple projects or teams.
• Extensive experience with Linux-based embedded systems, including Linux networking stacks, kernel internals, and device driver development.
• Strong expertise in software architecture, design patterns, large-scale system design, and scalable embedded platforms.
• Experience evaluating and improving existing architectures and codebases, and delivering software through CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Strong proficiency in object-oriented design, software quality practices, automated testing, development automation, modern tooling, and Agile methodologies.
• Ability to influence technical direction, lead through collaboration rather than direct management authority, and balance short-term delivery with long-term architecture.
• Excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, mentoring, and stakeholder-influence skills.
• US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status required.
