EN/JP Senior Translator (Contractor)

What you will do

• Provide simultaneous, consecutive, liaison, and whispered interpreting in onsite meetings, one-on-one and group settings, and online meetings.
• Translate technical and non-technical documents and terminology between Japanese and English.
• Interpret accurately for executives, customers, Japanese nationals, and local personnel while maintaining confidentiality and impartiality.
• Share terminology with other translators, train and mentor team members, and develop training materials.
• Support the translator supervisor and leadership with coordination, planning, scheduling, training, presentations, improvement activities, and equipment or software research.
• Use communication, remote-interpreting, and simultaneous-interpreting software and devices.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Bilingual or native and near-native Japanese and English proficiency, including minimum ILR Level 4+ proficiency in the non-native language.
• At least 5 years of interpreting experience in manufacturing or similar mechanical, electrical, chemical engineering, maintenance, or repair fields.
• In-depth knowledge of relevant production processes, equipment, and internal business processes.
• Ability to capture and translate nuances accurately while understanding cross-cultural differences.
• Strong communication skills, professionalism, punctuality, attentiveness, people orientation, teamwork, and impartiality.
• Ability to interpret in consecutive, liaison, chuchotage, and simultaneous modes in front of groups.
• Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Suite, remote interpreting software, and simultaneous interpreting devices.

• Must have valid authorization to work in the United States without restriction.
• Pre-employment drug testing is required.
• Some duties require PPE, potentially including a Tyvek suit, safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, bump cap, or hazmat suit with respirator.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in language, linguistics, education, translation/interpreting, engineering, or a technical field focused on manufacturing, or equivalent education and experience.
• More than 5 years of living, studying, or working professionally in both Japan and the U.S. or another English-speaking country.
• Lead interpreter experience on projects lasting more than two weeks with multiple interpreters.
• Knowledge of lean manufacturing, TPS, or Six Sigma.
• At least 5 years of translation experience using CAT tools and document software.
• Technological proficiency with interpretation devices, software, and audio equipment.
• Interpreting or translation certification, or membership in a related professional association.
