Principal Engineer (AI)

Location: San Jose, California, United States; hybrid working environment with some level of in-office and/or in-person expectations

Salary: $227,800–$338,800 USD annually; final compensation depends on location, qualifications, experience, and education.

What you will do

• Own the multi-year technical vision and target architecture for the Active IQ platform and align it across engineering, product management, and executive leadership.
• Architect and deliver agentic AI and machine learning systems, including their data, evaluation, and safety foundations, at hirify.global fleet scale.
• Lead the design and implementation of the most complex and highest-risk components through hands-on engineering, design reviews, and code reviews.
• Resolve systemic technical problems across teams and establish engineering standards, patterns, and practices.
• Evaluate emerging AI and cloud technologies, run proofs of concept, and make build, buy, or partner recommendations.
• Partner with SRE and operations on reliability, performance, security, automation, and observability; mentor senior engineers and represent engineering with customers, partners, and industry forums.

Requirements

• 15+ years of high-tech industry experience, including technical leadership at the principal or equivalent level.
• B.S. in Computer Science or a related field is required.
• Experience designing and developing agentic AI applications with modern frameworks such as LangGraph, LangChain, Google ADK, Phoenix, Guardrails, and Mem0.
• Strong knowledge of streaming and event-driven technologies such as Kafka; deep experience with relational, document, and vector databases, preferably including MongoDB.
• Extensive knowledge of cloud architecture and containerization, including preferably Kubernetes and Docker, and cloud services such as AWS or Azure.
• Extensive knowledge of observability and application performance monitoring platforms such as Dynatrace and Splunk.
• Experience building enterprise software with strong Python development and generative AI expertise, including infrastructure for storage, compute, and databases.
• Proven experience designing, shipping, architecting, implementing, and operating production-grade AI, machine learning, and highly scalable cloud systems on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, computer architecture, data structures, large-scale data processing, on-premises and cloud infrastructure, reliability, and security.
• Ability to make technical decisions in ambiguous problem spaces, communicate complex trade-offs to technical and executive audiences, build consensus, and work collaboratively.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor senior engineers and elevate engineering practices across teams; excellent problem-solving, analytical, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

Nice to have

• M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field.
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Docker, MongoDB, Dynatrace, or Splunk is preferred where specified.
