R&D Finance Lead (AI)

Location: Fully in-person between the Palo Alto HQ and San Francisco office, United States

What you will do

• Own finance for the research and engineering organization.
• Build models for compute costs, including training, inference, infrastructure spend, commitments, and usage.
• Forecast costs as the product scales and partner with engineering and research leadership on headcount plans and budgets.
• Evaluate build-versus-buy decisions and compute spending trade-offs.
• Partner with procurement on compute and vendor negotiations and with accounting on R&D cost treatment and capitalization.
• Translate cost per query, gross margin, and infrastructure efficiency into recommendations for the founding team.

Requirements

• Experience owning finance for an engineering or infrastructure organization at a high-growth technology company.
• Experience with compute or cloud as a major cost line is preferred.
• Understanding of reserved and on-demand pricing, GPU commitments, and utilization-driven unit economics.
• Ability to work with engineers, understand technical work, and build trusted cost models.
• Experience in a high-rigor environment and in building finance processes where data is messy and processes do not yet exist.
• Experience challenging expensive technical plans and helping develop lower-cost alternatives.
• Ability to use AI tools for practical work and build a finance function from the ground up.
