Senior Software Engineer (Civic Tech)

Location: Remote, open to candidates anywhere in the United States

Salary: $190,576 starting salary; full-time, salaried position

What you will do

• Design, build, and evolve the systems and services powering the Organizer platform.
• Own technical problems from discovery through deployment and production, making decisions based on tradeoffs and expected impact.
• Improve backend reliability, scalability, maintainability, security, documentation, testing, observability, and developer experience.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Engineering, and other stakeholders to turn requirements into effective solutions.
• Identify risks, dependencies, ambiguity, and changing assumptions early in the delivery process.
• Share context, provide feedback, mentor engineers, and improve engineering practices.

Requirements

• Production experience designing, developing, and maintaining backend software.
• Strong understanding of software design principles and architectural tradeoffs.
• Experience designing and maintaining APIs such as GraphQL, distributed services, and data-intensive applications.
• Experience debugging complex problems across services, infrastructure, and data.
• Strong understanding of relational and/or NoSQL databases, including MongoDB, data modeling, and query performance.
• Experience building modern JavaScript/TypeScript solutions and working with event-driven or distributed architectures such as AWS.
• Familiarity with incident management, logging, monitoring, observability, CI/CD practices, and modern deployment environments.
• Strong written and verbal communication, effective cross-functional collaboration, mentorship, and technical leadership experience.

Nice to have

• Full-stack experience or open-source contributions.
• Security- and privacy-conscious system design.
• Experience planning database migrations and large-scale data operations.
• Experience using AI tools or workflows.
• Experience in civic-tech, nonprofit, or data-driven social-impact products.
• Formal degree; candidates from nontraditional or retraining paths are welcome without one.
