Data Center Engineer

Location: Chicago, IL; home base in New Jersey with ongoing travel between New Jersey data centers and occasional travel to other US and international locations.

Salary: $70,000–$82,500 USD annually.

What you will do

• Build, rack, stack, install, migrate, and remove servers, blades, cards, memory, hard drives, transceivers, power equipment, and network devices.
• Install, terminate, test, and troubleshoot copper and fiber-optic cabling, circuits, and cross-connects.
• Diagnose hardware and software issues and coordinate with Network Engineering, Systems Engineering, Project Management, and Service Delivery teams.
• Perform cabinet and cage audits, inventory verification, rack elevation documentation, power-utilization monitoring, and data center maintenance.
• Manage shipping, receiving, storage, access arrangements, ticket updates, and customer coordination.
• Provide emergency outage assistance, flexible shift coverage, rotational on-call support, and travel to data centers, including short-notice travel throughout Europe.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience in telecommunications or a data center-related field.
• In-depth knowledge of telecommunications structured cabling standards, network device and server deployment, and data center operations standards.
• At least 3 years of experience using industry-standard test equipment.
• Experience with Building Management Systems and Branch Circuit Monitoring.
• Strong troubleshooting, organizational, communication, interpersonal, and attention-to-detail skills.
• Experience in mission-critical data center facility maintenance.
• Ability to lift and handle up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, stretch, work under a raised data center floor, and climb ladders up to 16 feet.

Culture & Benefits

• Non-office-based, on-site data center role with working days from Tuesday to Saturday: Tuesday–Friday, 4 PM to midnight; Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
• Sunday availability may be requested, and working hours may vary according to operational needs and maintenance windows.
• Required to report to a facility within an average of one hour for emergency outage assistance.
• Ongoing travel between New Jersey data centers and occasional travel beyond New Jersey, including multiple jurisdictions and geographies.
• Full compensation packages are based on candidate experience and relevant certification.
