Physical AI Engineer (Robotics)

Location: Aachen, Germany; onsite. Frequent travel to customer sites and NeuraGyms is required, approximately 40–60%.

What you will do

• Drive the development of cognitive robotics applications through Physical AI and the NeuraGym platform, owning outcomes on customer robots.
• Execute the NeuraGym pipeline, including teleoperation, data annotation, training, simulation, deployment, and validation.
• Deploy policies for real-time closed-loop control through distillation, quantization, action chunking, latency optimization, and on-device or edge inference.
• Act as the primary technical contact for customers, supporting adoption from kickoff through handover and enabling customer teams to train colleagues.
• Work hands-on with robot hardware, sensors, end-effectors, tool changers, calibration, electrical interfaces, fieldbus systems, and functional safety.
• Build evaluation harnesses, success-rate benchmarks, and regression tests, while feeding customer and field insights into the NeuraGym and core AI roadmaps.

Requirements

• Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Hands-on machine-learning experience in robotics, with strong expertise in at least one of vision-based manipulation, reinforcement or imitation learning, or multimodal models.
• Experience fine-tuning large pretrained models for robotics or another domain, including PEFT/LoRA or full fine-tuning, dataset curation, distillation, and evaluation.
• Solid Python skills and practical experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow; C++ is an additional advantage.
• Proven experience in customer-facing technical roles, including managing several customers in parallel.
• Understanding of robot hardware, including drives, joint modules, torque sensing, encoders, end-effectors, sensor integration, calibration, electrical and fieldbus interfaces such as EtherCAT, and functional safety concepts.
• Proven problem-solving skills, ability to manage multiple projects in parallel, strong execution focus, and personal commitment to deployment outcomes.
• Clear communication skills for translating between researchers, engineers, and end-users.
• Good command of English and German at B2–C1 level.
• Willingness to travel frequently to customer sites and NeuraGyms, approximately 40–60%.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with the open VLA and policy-learning ecosystem, including π0/π0.5, OpenVLA, LeRobot, and diffusion policies.
• C++ experience.
