Senior Protection & Controls Engineer

Location: Austin, Texas, United States; occasional travel of 10% or less may be required.

What you will do

• Develop and review protection and control engineering and design packages for substations, data centers, generation, BESS, and other large-load facilities.
• Develop and review protection philosophies, schemes, relay settings, coordination, and studies for transformers, buses, feeders, transmission lines, generators, and other electrical equipment.
• Coordinate P&C design with physical substation, electrical studies, SCADA/communications, metering, civil/structural, and other engineering disciplines.
• Review vendor documentation and support projects through construction, testing, commissioning, and energization, including field issue resolution.
• Provide technical QA/QC, senior-level reviews, mentoring, supervision, and technical leadership for P&C engineers and designers.
• Improve engineering quality and efficiency through standards, automation, and responsible use of AI tools.

Requirements

• Licensed Professional Engineer required.
• 10+ years of protection and control engineering experience, preferably in consulting, EPC, or detailed design environments.
• Strong background in substation P&C design and protective relaying for MV and HV systems.
• Experience with protection tools and relay software such as ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, Powerbase, SEL Quickset, and GE Enervista.
• Experience developing and reviewing complete P&C design packages from conceptual design through IFC.
• Strong knowledge of protective relay applications, settings, and coordination, plus familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, NERC, and utility P&C requirements.
• Experience coordinating P&C design across multidisciplinary EPC projects.
• Strong client-facing communication, technical leadership, teamwork, project management, and adaptability skills.
• Experience leveraging AI and automation tools responsibly to improve quality, productivity, and innovation.

Nice to have

• Experience with data centers, BESS, generation, or other large-load and industrial facilities.
• Experience with inverter-based power plants.
• Experience supporting construction, testing, and commissioning.
