Project Engineer - Protection

Location: Houston, Texas, United States; requires domestic and international travel of at least 25% based on focus area.

Salary: $81,300–$122,000 annually. Project Engineer I: $89,400–$134,100; Project Engineer II: $107,600–$161,500; Project Engineer III: $129,200–$193,900 annually.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement protection and control schemes, including relay protection and control systems.
• Create protective relay settings for industrial plants, generation facilities, substations, and transmission and distribution utilities.
• Train and assist customers with the design, configuration, validation, installation, commissioning, and operation of automation and protection systems.
• Perform system testing and commissioning to validate protection scheme functionality and performance.
• Prepare functional design specifications, detailed design documents, reports, checklists, test reports, and other deliverables.
• Complete assigned work within agreed scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety requirements while collaborating with project managers, engineers, technicians, and protection experts.

Requirements

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a relevant discipline.
• 3+ years of relevant application experience with electric power systems, industry practices, and protection design practices and philosophies.
• Good knowledge of electric power system protection and control.
• Working knowledge of electric power system design, studies, information and communication technology, and protective relay applications, including tools such as ETAP, SKM, or RTDS.
• Strong writing, documentation, speaking, problem-solving, and complex power system protection analysis skills.
• Willingness to learn new skills, assume new responsibilities, and work cooperatively in a team environment.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally at least 25% based on focus area.
• Background check results satisfactory to SEL and negative drug test results.

Nice to have

• Professional Engineer license or equivalent certification.
• Industrial plant, consulting engineering, or system integrator experience.
• Project engineering experience.
• Experience programming, testing, and commissioning protective relays.
• Experience developing AC/DC schematics, single-line diagrams, and wiring diagrams for protection and control applications.
• Experience developing settings configuration files for SEL devices using AcSELerator QuickSet.
