Staff Software Engineer - Platform

Location: United Kingdom; fully remote

What you will do

• Lead the technical direction and architecture of platform engineering domains, balancing delivery needs with scalability and maintainability.
• Design, build, and evolve secure, scalable APIs and shared platform services for customers, partners, and internal engineering teams.
• Drive technical decisions through design reviews, technical proposals, and Architecture Decision Records.
• Establish authentication and authorization patterns using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, API keys, and mutual TLS.
• Improve customer onboarding, configuration management, platform extensibility, reliability, deployment processes, and developer productivity.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, SRE, Developer Experience, and Technical Authors.

Requirements

• Significant commercial software engineering experience, including experience as a Senior Engineer, Technical Lead, or Staff Engineer.
• Proven influence on technical direction beyond a single team or product area, with experience mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards.
• Deep experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems and production APIs.
• Strong experience with relational databases, particularly SQL Server or similar enterprise-scale platforms.
• Strong knowledge of RESTful API design, OpenAPI specifications, API versioning, and developer experience considerations.
• Experience implementing OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and related identity and access management mechanisms.
• Hands-on experience operating cloud-native services on AWS, including API Gateway, IAM, and cloud-native security patterns.
• Strong knowledge of containers and orchestration technologies, including Docker, ECS, and/or EKS.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code, automated testing strategies, and modern CI/CD pipelines.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including explaining technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.

• Experience with multi-tenant SaaS platforms.
• Experience in energy, utilities, or other highly regulated industries.
• Familiarity with Domain-Driven Design and event-driven architectures.
• Experience building developer platforms or internal engineering tooling.
• Exposure to platform security, identity management, or customer onboarding systems at scale.
