Senior Infrastructure Automation Engineer (Ansible/Terraform)

What you will do

• Build and operate an on-premises Infrastructure Automation Center of Excellence for VM, storage, database, network, identity, backup, and monitoring provisioning.
• Develop reusable Ansible playbooks, roles, collections, inventories, workflow templates, execution environments, access controls, and schedules.
• Create Terraform and/or OpenTofu modules and controlled plan, review, apply, state, drift, import, and provider-integration pipelines.
• Automate VMware vSphere/vCenter and assigned Red Hat OpenShift capabilities, including VM lifecycles, namespaces, access, quotas, configuration, and persistent storage.
• Implement testing, release promotion, failure handling, rollback or compensating actions, recovery validation, and retained execution evidence.
• Package versioned Golden Paths with runbooks and adoption guidance, train consuming teams, maintain automation platforms, and report measurable technical-debt reduction.

Requirements

• Senior-level benchmark of 7+ years in systems, platform, or infrastructure engineering, including 3+ years developing and supporting production infrastructure automation; the periods may overlap. Personally authored code and implemented workflows are required; tool administration alone is insufficient.
• Recent hands-on Ansible development and practical Terraform or OpenTofu experience, including playbooks, roles, modules, inventories, variables, APIs, plans, state, dependencies, and troubleshooting.
• Production automation experience with at least one of VMware vSphere/vCenter or Red Hat OpenShift, plus the ability to integrate with adjacent infrastructure domains. Cloud-only automation is insufficient.
• Working knowledge of Linux and/or Windows administration, networking, DNS, connectivity, storage, identity and permissions, databases, backup, and recovery.
• Direct automation depth in at least one storage or database lifecycle integration area.
• Experience with Git-based collaboration, code review, reusable components, automated testing, release promotion, and scripting with Python, PowerShell, Bash, or comparable languages.
• Ability to secure credentials and state, limit change impact, handle repeat execution and partial failures, protect data, and support automation after release.
• Ability to gather requirements, demonstrate working automation, document interfaces and support procedures, train consumers, and provide auditable progress, risk, failure, and outcome information to Government leaders.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information technology, information systems, or a related field, or an allowable equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to meet Government suitability, training, site-access, and system-access requirements and obtain and maintain the personnel suitability, credentials, system access, and training required for Tier 4 / High Risk clearance.

Nice to have

• Ansible Automation Platform controller administration and execution environments; OpenShift GitOps, Operators, or virtualization.
• API-based storage or database provisioning, restricted or disconnected environments, ITSM/CMDB and service-catalog integration, infrastructure compliance automation, observability, and internal automation-product libraries.
• Experience in VA, federal, or regulated environments; reusable patterns adopted by other teams; measurable technical-debt remediation; and relevant Red Hat, VMware, infrastructure-as-code, or automation credentials.
