Sr Systems Engineer (Network Security)

Location: United Kingdom - Newbury, Berkshire; hybrid eligible. Must be a UK national and able to attain or already hold HMG Security Check (SC) clearance. Some travel within the UK and Europe, weekend and out-of-hours work required.

What you will do

• Configure, administer, patch, upgrade, and troubleshoot Cisco ASA, Cisco Firepower Threat Defense, and Palo Alto PA-Series firewalls.
• Manage firewall ACLs, security policies, NAT, routing, site-to-site and remote-access VPNs, audits, security events, and incident investigations.
• Administer, monitor, patch, and maintain VMware vSphere environments and NetApp storage platforms, including capacity management and fault resolution.
• Develop infrastructure provisioning, configuration, compliance, and operational automation using approved scripting and automation frameworks; use AI-assisted tools where appropriate.
• Provide operational support for internal and customer cloud services, escalating complex issues and collaborating with Infrastructure Operations, Security, and customer-facing teams.
• Maintain auditable technical documentation and change records, and participate in planned maintenance and the out-of-hours support rota.

Requirements

• Minimum three years of experience administering firewalls, network switching, and virtualisation technologies.
• Experience with Cisco ASA, Cisco Firepower Threat Defense, Palo Alto PA-Series, TCP/IP, subnetting, routing, VLANs, NAT, and VPN technologies.
• Experience with VMware vSphere and NetApp storage systems.
• Enterprise administration experience with Windows Server and/or Red Hat Linux.
• Experience in operational monitoring, incident management, problem solving, and controlled change implementation.
• Experience with infrastructure automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or equivalent; scripting with PowerShell, Python, or similar languages.
• Experience using Git-based version control, change management practices, APIs, and automation workflows for infrastructure platforms.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, organisational, troubleshooting, documentation, and change-control skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Must be a UK national and able to attain or already hold HMG Security Check (SC) clearance.

Nice to have

• CCNA certification.
• Relevant Palo Alto Networks or Cisco security certifications.
