Engineering Intern (AI)

Location: New York City, in person for part of the week

Company

String builds infrastructure that enables software agents to access and collect public web data, processing more than 200 million pages weekly.

What you will do

• Use engineering tools on real tasks, identify unexpected behavior, and document findings.
• Ship an early pull request with a fix, script improvement, test, or other tooling enhancement.
• Analyze and improve an existing coding-agent workflow end to end.
• Build tools for manual engineering processes.
• Investigate failures, write tests, review code, and explain technical decisions.
• Work directly with the CTO and engineers through tickets, code reviews, and pull requests.

Requirements

• Experience building a project that can be explained in detail, including the choices made.
• Comfort with Git and at least one programming language.
• Ability to work through unfamiliar systems, identify incorrect tool output, design tests, and make sound decisions when tools cannot decide.
• Ability to work with the team in New York City for part of the week.
• Ability to enter a lawful contractor engagement where you live.
• No particular degree, school year, GPA, or previous internship is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with TypeScript and shell; Go and Python are also used.
• Prior use of coding agents.

• Project walkthrough with an engineer, including technical decisions; no algorithm quiz or whiteboard puzzle.
• Working session in the New York office on a small, self-contained tooling problem; no advance preparation is required.
