SW Engineer Intern (AI Engineering)

Location: San Jose, California, United States; hybrid working with office attendance generally Monday through Thursday and flexible remote work on Fridays

What you will do

• Own a well-defined engineering project from problem definition through delivery.
• Build and test AI agents, copilots, and automated workflows that perform meaningful multi-step work.
• Connect agents to trusted data, services, and internal tools using retrieval, tool calling, and orchestration.
• Define agent autonomy and human handoff points, then evaluate reliability, failure modes, and real-world performance.
• Use AI coding tools, validate their output through testing and review, and write clean, documented code.
• Collaborate with engineers, mentors, and cross-functional partners through code reviews and delivery.

Requirements

• Penultimate-year student, or final-year student planning to continue into a one-year master's course.
• Permanent right to work in the UK; candidates on a student visa cannot be considered.
• Available for full-time work throughout the 12-week program from June to early September 2027.
• Previous experience building AI agents and automated workflows, with interest in AI technologies.
• Currently enrolled in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related degree program.
• Proficiency in Python, ideally demonstrated through projects, open source, or hackathon work beyond coursework.
• Hands-on experience building an LLM-powered or agentic system that performs multi-step work; ideally, the system has been used by someone else.
• Familiarity with grounding and retrieval, tool use, orchestration, memory, or conversational interfaces.
• Computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and operating systems or networking concepts.
• Strong problem-solving and technical communication skills, with the ability to break down ambiguous problems and deliver in small steps.

Nice to have

• Experience with agentic engineering tools and patterns, including Claude Code, Cursor, MCP servers, custom skills, or agent frameworks.
• Sound engineering judgment when reviewing AI-generated work, identifying failure modes, and choosing between automation and human review.
• Proactive mindset, continuous learning, and fast iteration.
