TL;DR
Senior Engineer, Constellation Simulation (IRIS2) (Satellite Communications/Python): Developing and validating software models of multi-orbit satellite constellations, communications links, ground infrastructure, and user demand with an accent on orbital dynamics, link budgets, capacity, and system performance. Focus on engineering trade-off analysis, large-scale simulation data workflows, visualization, and reliable CI/CD execution on Microsoft Azure.

Location: Betzdorf, Luxembourg or Munich (Unterföhring), Germany; at least 60% onsite from the office. Travel may be required for project realization.

Company

SES is building and operating IRIS², a European Union secure multi-orbit satellite communications constellation, with consortium partners and core members.

What you will do

  • Develop, maintain, validate, and document simulations of satellite constellations, communications links, ground infrastructure, networks, traffic, services, and user demand.
  • Model orbital dynamics, coverage, visibility, link budgets, interference, capacity, routing, gateways, and time-varying multi-orbit system behaviour.
  • Perform trade-off, sensitivity, scenario, and optimization analyses covering demand, service performance, architecture, spectrum, gateways, infrastructure, cost, and implementation risk.
  • Process and analyse large simulation, market-demand, engineering, and external datasets; build repeatable workflows, dashboards, maps, and visualizations.
  • Develop modular, maintainable, tested simulation software primarily in Python or MATLAB, with suitable lower-level languages such as Rust.
  • Manage Azure-based CI/CD pipelines for build, testing, validation, packaging, deployment, and reproducible execution environments, collaborating with SES IT.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • At least three years of experience modelling complex, dynamic systems and at least three years of software development using Python, MATLAB, or comparable languages.
  • Good knowledge of satellite constellations and satellite communications systems, including orbital geometry, coverage, radio-frequency links, link budgets, interference, capacity, and communications-system performance.
  • Experience designing and performing engineering trade-off, sensitivity, or optimization studies.
  • Experience handling large datasets, deriving insights with analytical and visualization libraries, and documenting technical assumptions, methods, results, and limitations.
  • Ability to develop clear, maintainable, tested, and documented technical software, with experience in source control and collaborative development workflows.
  • Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in another language is an asset.
  • Eligibility for ESA/EU SECRET personal security clearance is essential, including willingness to undergo the required clearance procedure.

Nice to have

  • Experience with multi-orbit constellation modelling, telecommunications network simulation, resource allocation, or traffic-demand modelling.
  • Knowledge of optimization, operations research, numerical methods, or geospatial analysis.
  • Experience with scientific-computing and data-analysis libraries in Python or MATLAB.
  • Experience developing high-performance software in Rust or another lower-level language.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, Microsoft Azure, automated testing, CI/CD, containers, infrastructure automation, cloud or distributed computing, and reproducible development environments.
  • Experience in satellite, telecommunications, aerospace, or other complex system-engineering programmes.

Culture & Benefits

  • Permanent employment with collaboration across system engineering, satellite engineering, ground segment, service, operations, IT, and external partners.
  • Office-based work is required at least 60% of the time, with travel as needed for project realization.
  • Equal opportunity and affirmative action employer committed to fair employment opportunities.
