Staff Software Engineer (Robotics Simulation)

Location: Remote in the United States; candidates living within a specific mile radius of a GM hub are expected to report onsite three times a week or at another frequency set by the manager. Relocation benefits are available for qualifying candidates.

Salary: $160,200–$290,700 annual base salary; bonus potential is also available.

What you will do

• Build and own simulation environments for manipulation, perception, and navigation validation.
• Model robot platforms using physically accurate dynamics, kinematics, actuation, and realistic RGB-D and LiDAR sensor behavior.
• Develop scene and facility authoring tools, including CAD and existing plant-model import paths.
• Integrate simulation into CI so scenario coverage runs for every release candidate.
• Support AI data generation and policy evaluation, and quantify where simulation diverges from hardware.
• Drive virtual commissioning and digital twin capabilities, including workcell import and collaborative authoring.

Requirements

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 4+ years building or operating robotics simulation.
• Experience validating real robot behavior against simulation, closing the simulation-to-hardware gap, and supporting teams as an infrastructure owner.
• M.S. degree or higher in Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related technical field; equivalent industry experience with demonstrated simulation depth may be considered.
• Hands-on experience with Process Simulate, Isaac Sim, Gazebo, or a comparable commercial or open-source simulator.
• Strong understanding of rigid body dynamics, contact modeling, numerical integration, and solver limitations.
• Experience with sensor simulation and rendering, including LiDAR and depth-camera models, plus GPU-accelerated or parallel simulation for large-scale data generation.
• Experience with URDF, SDF, USD, and their conversion pitfalls; proficiency in C++ and Python.
• Ability to select appropriate simulation fidelity, assess when results should not be trusted, and balance simulation speed against accuracy.
• Ability to work effectively with remote teams across multiple time zones and treat simulation as a product with internal users.

Nice to have

• Experience with sim-to-real transfer and domain randomization.
• Experience with virtual commissioning or digital twin projects in manufacturing.
• Familiarity with Visual Components, Process Simulate, or comparable process simulation tools.
• Prior open-source contributions to Gazebo, Isaac Sim, or the ROS ecosystem.
