Senior Scientist, Engineering (Bioprocess Engineering)

Location: Rahway, New Jersey, United States; onsite, first-shift day schedule

Salary: $117,000–$184,200 annually, plus potential annual bonus and long-term incentive.

What you will do

• Develop safe and robust manufacturing processes for late-stage small-molecule pipeline projects through process characterization, technology transfer, validation, filing, and supply support.
• Optimize and characterize enzyme manufacturing control strategies across scales using microbial fermentation and downstream processing expertise.
• Conduct hands-on experiments at laboratory bench and kilo-lab scales and support technology transfer to commercial manufacturing facilities.
• Mentor junior staff and strengthen fermentation and downstream-processing laboratory capabilities.
• Apply Quality Risk Management methods and statistical design of experiments.
• Maintain safety and quality compliance through cGMPs, risk assessments, deviation investigations, and Good Documentation Practices.

Requirements

• PhD in Chemical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Biological Engineering, Synthetic Biology, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• At least three years of experience in chemical, pharmaceutical, large-molecule, or vaccine process development.
• Experience with microbial fermentation, downstream process development and optimization, and process scale-up and scale-down.
• Ability to develop and execute experimental programs addressing process design, robustness, and productivity.
• Experience with process scale-up and technology transfer from laboratory to pilot plant or factory.
• Ability to mentor technical laboratory staff and support data analysis.
• Effective communication, collaboration, organization, writing, interpersonal, and time-management skills.
• Ability to lead and operate within a cross-functional process development team.

Nice to have

• Experience with small-molecule drug-substance unit operations such as chemical reactions, work-up, and crystallization.
• Experience leading filing authoring, validation planning, and execution.
• Experience guiding internal and external technical discussions.
• Familiarity with statistical design and analysis tools, cGMP concepts, Quality by Design, mathematical modeling, and theoretical scaling calculations.
• Experience supporting or writing regulatory filings.
