Staff Scientist, Protein Production (Protein Biochemistry)

Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland, United States; laboratory-based onsite position

Annual base salary: $88,100–$134,400, plus potential discretionary or non-discretionary bonus.

What you will do

• Design and independently execute complex experiments supporting reagent and assay development.
• Develop protein reagent purification and biochemical characterization methods.
• Analyze experimental data using spreadsheets, graphing software, and statistical methods; prepare presentations, summaries, recommendations, and next steps.
• Serve as a subject matter expert, guide team members, and coordinate the work of junior colleagues.
• Manage laboratory supplies, equipment, electronic and physical inventories, and reagent processing, aliquoting, vialing, and labeling.
• Support laboratory infrastructure monitoring and general lab maintenance initiatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in life sciences or a related area; additional experience may substitute for a graduate degree.
• At least 12 years of hands-on laboratory work experience.
• Strong scientific fundamentals with a protein biochemistry background and strong knowledge of recombinant protein technology.
• Working knowledge of protein chemistry, protein and/or peptide isolation and purification, and conjugation methods.
• Ability to learn and follow standard laboratory techniques and safety precautions.
• Ability to execute experiments, troubleshoot issues, and propose and implement corrective actions.
• Strong analytical, organizational, planning, communication, and time-management skills, including the ability to manage changing priorities and time-sensitive deliverables.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, lead and guide team members, and develop recommendations and action plans from complex data.
• Proficiency in MS Excel; attention to detail and a creative, proactive, self-motivated approach.
• Ability to work in a laboratory environment involving chemical reagents and some Biosafety Level 2 work, including human blood or blood products. Up to 75% of the day may be spent at a lab bench; occasional work above four feet and lifting up to 25 pounds are required.

• Protein purification through column chromatography, including FPLC and HPLC.
• Analytical characterization of purified proteins using PAGE, Western, IEF, UV/Vis, or related methods.
