Senior Scientist, Downstream Process Development R&D (Biologics)

Location: On premise in Bothell, Washington, United States. Candidates must have permanent authorization to work in the United States; U.S. work visa sponsorship is not available.

Annual base salary: $93,600–$156,000, plus a 12.5% bonus target and eligibility for a share-based long-term incentive program.

What you will do

• Design and execute small-scale downstream process development studies and support pilot-scale and manufacturing purification activities.
• Analyze experimental data, test hypotheses, and improve understanding of recovery and purification processes.
• Contribute to process characterization, validation strategies, Quality by Design approaches, and regulatory filings.
• Prepare technical reports, present scientific results to cross-functional teams and management, and publish externally when appropriate.
• Identify operational efficiencies and support infrastructure, platform, and technology changes across Bioprocess R&D workflows.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree with 6+ years, or PhD with 0–3 years of experience.
• Degree in a biological or engineering discipline such as Biotechnology, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Chemical or Biochemical Engineering, or an equivalent field.
• Hands-on experience in recombinant protein downstream process development, technology transfer, and/or bioprocess manufacturing.
• Strong understanding of protein chemistry and protein analytics, with the ability to apply current scientific literature.
• Ability to independently drive experimental work, deliver results, and contribute innovative solutions within project teams.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a matrix environment, with strong organization, motivation, communication, technical documentation, and presentation skills.
• Strong analytical, data interpretation, and computer skills, plus the ability to manage workload and contribute to project resource planning.
• Experience using common AI tools, including generative technologies such as ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot, for problem solving and productivity, with responsible AI, risk management, and ethical-use awareness.

Nice to have

• Experience recovering and purifying recombinant proteins from mammalian, microbial, or yeast expression systems.
• Experience transferring biologics processes to pilot-scale or commercial manufacturing, including data acquisition and process control systems.
• Experience supporting late-stage development, process validation, and commercialization.
• Working knowledge of statistical experimental design and data analysis.
• Broad understanding of biologics drug development and requirements for advancing candidates through clinical development.
