Principal Engineer - Building Services (Mechanical Engineering)

Location: Flexible UK, with a required base office at an SSEN office or depot around Scotland; offices are available in Aberdeen, Inverness and Perth. Flexible First and hybrid options are available.

Salary: £59,800–£89,800 plus performance-related bonus, car or car allowance, and benefits.

What you will do

• Write, maintain and own technical specifications for substation mechanical services and interfaces with transmission-network plant and equipment.
• Cover mechanical systems including battery systems, fire protection, ventilation, water supplies, air conditioning and emerging technologies.
• Review specifications using project lessons learned, emerging technology and changes to applicable standards.
• Approve apparatus, equipment, inspection test plans and records; witness tests and produce Technical Authority reports.
• Provide subject matter expertise during Design Authority reviews and verify that project proposals are fit for purpose.
• Provide technical consultancy, support staff development and represent hirify.global at ENA, IEC, CIGRE and other industry groups.

Requirements

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.
• Chartered Engineer status through a relevant institution, or commitment to work towards chartered status.
• Expert-level experience designing, specifying, constructing, operating and maintaining mechanical services in a data centre, substation or industrial environment.
• Ability to technically assess issues, critically review solutions and apply detailed knowledge of relevant national and international standards, including National Grid, Energy Networks Association, British and European specifications and standards.
• Experience managing engineering, asset management, contractor and other technical stakeholders.
• Data-led approach to design validation and specification compliance for transmission substation building requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience in manufacturing, testing or commissioning transmission-voltage substation electrical services and auxiliary systems.
