Tech Lead AI-assisted Search (AI)

Location: Berlin, Würzburg, Bad Mergentheim, Niedernhall-Waldzimmern, Schorndorf, or nationwide within Germany; hybrid mobile working, usually 3 days per week.

What you will do

• Own the technical quality and architecture of product retrieval and embedding capabilities based on OpenSearch.
• Guide developers working on search components in Python and Java, conduct reviews, establish pragmatic standards, and define appropriate solution depth.
• Roll out search solutions from prototypes to production across multilingual, multichannel, and multi-application environments.
• Develop an Infrastructure-as-Code strategy for AWS and CloudFormation and integrate it with the Platform Team’s environment.
• Work hands-on on retrieval and encoding components and take them into production.
• Build expertise in operating production ML pipelines for custom models such as learning-to-rank and search understanding.

Requirements

• Degree in computer science, business informatics, or a comparable qualification combined with relevant professional experience.
• Previous technical responsibility for an engineering team as a Tech Lead, including technical guidance, reviews, and stage-gate decisions.
• In-depth practical experience with retrieval and search infrastructure, ideally OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, vector search, and indexing and encoding pipelines.
• Experience taking strong prototypes to production search solutions, ideally in international, multilingual environments with multiple channels and applications.
• Deep understanding of backend architectures and distributed systems, with practical development experience in Python and/or Java.
• Strong AWS knowledge and sufficient Infrastructure-as-Code expertise to design and share responsibility for a robust application strategy, ideally with CloudFormation.
• Confident communication in German and English and effective collaboration with international, cross-functional teams, architects, and the Platform Team.

Nice to have

• Basic understanding of production ML pipelines for custom models, including training, deployment, and monitoring, for example with Databricks.
