Staff Software Engineer, Media Experience

Base salary: $217,000–$303,000 USD annually

What you will do

• Define technical components for ingesting, processing, storing, and delivering video and audio content.
• Collaborate with product, design, client engineering, and platform engineering on media products and performance.
• Contribute to the full development cycle, including technical design, implementation, testing, experimentation, analysis, and launch.
• Review code, design documents, product specifications, and mocks while recommending engineering standards and best practices.
• Mentor junior engineers and balance rapid product development with quality and reliability.

Requirements

• BS degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of industry experience with large-scale distributed systems and 7+ years of professional software development experience.
• Professional experience with one or more general-purpose languages: Go, Python, Ruby, Java, or C++.
• Experience with GraphQL, REST, HTTP, gRPC, Thrift basics, and designing maintainable APIs.
• Experience with distributed caching layers and large-scale distributed data storage systems such as Redis.
• Familiarity with image processing and delivery, including scaling, cropping, progressive JPEG, and WebP.
• Familiarity with HLS, MPEG-DASH, MP4, other streaming protocols, and H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9, and AV1 compression standards.
• Strong organizational, prioritization, delivery, and communication skills, including collaboration in a fully remote environment with technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice to have

• Curiosity about video compression advancements, including conferences, research papers, and current industry trends.
• Understanding of video visual quality metrics such as VMAF and PSNR.
• Hands-on experience with FFMPEG, GPAC, or similar media frameworks.
• Experience with client-side media technologies such as AVFoundation, VideoToolbox, and video prefetching.
• Familiarity with background data fetching.
• Strong data analysis skills using SQL.
