Staff Backend Engineer (Cybersecurity)

Location: US, Remote; fully remote, with up to 5% travel required.

Base salary: $230,000–$270,000 annually, plus equity in the form of stock options.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for backend services and APIs supporting user access, account hierarchies, settings, and administration workflows.
• Lead architecture and implementation of authorization, tenant-boundary, and customer account model changes.
• Remain hands-on in production code while guiding technical decisions, tradeoffs, and delivery across teams.
• Improve API quality, testing, security, observability, rollout practices, and operational readiness.
• Partner with Product and Engineering, mentor engineers, and influence standards through reviews, pairing, and documentation.
• Diagnose complex production issues and drive preventive reliability improvements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including deep experience building production backend systems.
• Experience leading technical direction or architecture for complex services, APIs, or platform capabilities.
• Strong experience with distributed or multi-tenant systems, data modeling, SQL, relational data stores, API design using REST or GraphQL, and cloud-hosted production services.
• Deep experience with a modern backend language such as Python, Go, Java, or TypeScript.
• Experience with containerized services such as Docker, testing, and operational practices for customer-facing systems.
• Ability to lead through ambiguity, align multiple teams, communicate architecture and tradeoffs, and balance security, customer experience, scalability, maintainability, and delivery speed.
• Experience mentoring engineers and improving engineering practices, production quality, and operational readiness.

Nice to have

• Experience with RBAC, SSO, account hierarchies, delegated administration, auditability, or identity and access management.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, AWS, Kubernetes, feature flags, and observability tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry.
• Experience in cybersecurity or a customer-facing SaaS platform with complex tenant models.
