TL;DR
2027 Summer Intern – Research and Development - Power Electronics & Energy Conversion Systems (Power Electronics/Energy Conversion): Supporting research and development of power conversion, electric-drive systems, power modules, charging systems, and vehicle electrification technologies with an accent on circuit analysis, modeling, simulation, prototype hardware, and laboratory testing. Focus on designing and evaluating inverters, converters, gate drives, semiconductors, and control systems, analyzing efficiency and thermal performance, and troubleshooting experimental results.
Location: Hybrid; report to Pontiac, Michigan or Warren, Michigan at least three times per week. The role requires a U.S. Person and is subject to export control restrictions.
Company
hirify.global develops automotive technologies focused on zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.
What you will do
Support research and development projects in power electronics, energy conversion, electric drives, charging, and vehicle electrification.
Evaluate circuits, converters, inverters, power modules, gate drives, semiconductors, control methods, and system architectures.
Develop and use engineering models and simulations to analyze switching behavior, losses, thermal performance, control response, electromagnetic effects, and system tradeoffs.
Assist with prototype hardware, including schematics, PCBs, gate-drive circuits, power stages, sensors, and measurement interfaces.
Support laboratory checkout, instrumentation, data acquisition, testing, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and design improvements.
Document designs and experiments, maintain laboratory records, collaborate with researchers and engineering partners, and present findings.
Requirements
Currently pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, power electronics, power systems, energy conversion, control systems, mechatronics, electromagnetics, or a related science or engineering field.
Available to work full-time, 40 hours per week, for the duration of the summer internship.
Willing to work in a laboratory and engineering test environment and follow applicable safety requirements.
Must be a U.S. Person: U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee.
Must not require GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future, including H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, or J-1 support.
Nice to have
Coursework, research, or project experience in power electronics, semiconductor devices, electric machines, motor drives, converters, inverters, power systems, circuit design, control systems, electromagnetics, or thermal management.
Experience with multilevel inverters, resonant or high-frequency conversion, gate-drive design, PCB layout, power-module design, or switching-device characterization.
Familiarity with SiC, GaN, MOSFET, IGBT, hybrid-switch, or other power-semiconductor technologies.
Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, LTspice, PSIM, ANSYS, COMSOL, Python, C/C++, embedded controllers, FPGA or microcontroller platforms, data acquisition, or automated test systems.
Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, power analyzers, probes, thermal cameras, electronic loads, dynamometers, and impedance analyzers.
Understanding of switching and conduction losses, parasitics, dead time, modulation, control-loop design, thermal limits, EMI/EMC, magnetic components, and power-device protection.
Experience designing experiments, analyzing measurements, correlating simulation with test results, or performing uncertainty and error analysis.
Ability to read technical papers, patents, schematics, datasheets, and engineering specifications, with strong analytical, troubleshooting, written, verbal, laboratory-recordkeeping, and collaboration skills.
Work with researchers and cross-functional partners on future electric, hybrid, and propulsion applications.
Focus on efficiency, power density, performance, reliability, cost, thermal behavior, and system integration.
Summer internship start dates are May 24 or June 14, 2027.
Benefits and total rewards are available to employees from the first day.
