Accounting Manager

Location: Remote, but candidates must reside in Colorado or Ohio; the listed location is Willoughby, Ohio.

Salary: $80,000–$85,000 annually, plus a potential annual bonus; OTE $88,000–$93,500.

What you will do

• Supervise, hire, train, and manage the General Ledger Team while ensuring timely and accurate financial close activities under GAAP.
• Prepare, review, approve, and record journal entries and supporting schedules for revenue, expenses, payroll, benefits, allocations, and bad debt.
• Review account reconciliations, complete quarterly internal-control reporting, support close calls, and respond to Corporate Accounting inquiries.
• Track newsprint orders, receipts, invoicing, and inventory roll-forwards; calculate newsprint expense and prepare the related journal entry.
• Release P&L details, support variance analyses and Day 7 reports, and answer financial-results questions from department heads, FP&A contacts, publishers, and field locations.
• Support special projects, identify process improvements, communicate technical issues to IT, and participate in the expansion of Shared Services.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, math, or a related field; an accounting degree and a combination of education and experience are preferred.
• Knowledge of accounting processes, internal controls, and strong application of GAAP.
• Experience executing financial statement close activities.
• 5+ years of related General Ledger accounting experience required; 5–7+ years preferred.
• 2–3 years of supervisory experience required, with demonstrated leadership, team development, collaboration, and customer-focused skills.
• Advanced Excel proficiency, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, reconciliations, and roll-forward schedules.
• Knowledge of automated accounting systems, preferably Oracle, and business intelligence and reporting systems such as EPM.
• Strong written and verbal communication, technical documentation, problem-solving, attention to detail, initiative, and ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Must be willing to complete and pass a full pre-employment background check.
