Director, Product Design User Interface

Location: Washington, D.C.; on-site five days a week

Salary: $159,100–$265,100 annual, with possible bonus or incentive eligibility

What you will do

• Define and evolve the UI design language across web, mobile apps, and emerging product surfaces.
• Set quality standards for visual design, interaction design, motion, and interface craft.
• Lead the development, adoption, and governance of a scalable design system with Engineering.
• Establish reusable components, interaction patterns, and standards for cohesive and efficient product development.
• Review major product experiences from concept through launch and provide craft direction and feedback.
• Partner with Product Management, Engineering, Content Design, and newsroom partners while mentoring designers and improving design consistency.

Requirements

• Significant experience in product design, UI design, interaction design, or a related discipline, with deep expertise in high-quality digital product experiences.
• Experience defining or evolving visual design languages, interaction patterns, component systems, or large-scale design systems.
• Strong visual and interaction-design craft, including typography, layout, hierarchy, interaction, motion, responsive design, and component-based interfaces.
• Experience designing across web and mobile applications.
• Experience leading the development, adoption, or governance of reusable design systems in partnership with Engineering.
• Ability to provide design direction, critique complex product experiences, and improve quality from concept through launch.
• Experience partnering with Product Management and Engineering to create scalable, technically feasible experiences from product strategy and user needs.
• Strong understanding of accessibility and its application to interface and design-system decisions.
• Experience mentoring and developing designers, influencing multidisciplinary teams, communicating design decisions to senior stakeholders, and translating systemic problems into reusable solutions.
• Familiarity with modern product-design and prototyping tools and emerging AI-enabled design or development workflows.
