Director of Government Affairs & Policy (AI)

Location: Remote from Texas, Florida, Virginia, or Washington, DC; frequent in-person and virtual engagement with legislators, agencies, and stakeholders.

Estimated base salary: $200,000–$225,000 plus equity.

What you will do

• Own state-by-state and federal government affairs strategy, prioritization, and investment decisions.
• Identify state appropriations, grants, and program funding opportunities and build pursuit plans.
• Track education technology, AI, and student privacy legislation and advise leadership on its impact.
• Represent hirify.global with legislators, legislative staff, state education agencies, and other stakeholders; deliver testimony and recommend bill language and amendments.
• Manage contracted state lobbyists, including their strategy, performance, scope, and spend.
• Partner with Revenue, Sales, Customer Success, Marketing, and Product on procurement, statewide opportunities, proposals, RFPs, and policy-informed go-to-market work; lead the Government Affairs team and build its processes and future hiring plan.

Requirements

• Demonstrated government affairs results, ideally at the state level, including securing appropriations, grants, or other state funding; quantifiable outcomes are strongly preferred.
• Experience delivering legislative testimony and deep knowledge of the legislative process, including committees, amendments, and legislative staff engagement.
• Experience working with or managing lobbyists.
• Experience in education policy, EdTech, or technology policy, including understanding of state education funding.
• Strong political judgment and ability to adapt messaging across parties and states.
• Ability to quickly become an expert on the product, value proposition, and policy positions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in high-stakes settings and collaborate across teams in a fast-moving startup.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with K-12 AI policy, student data privacy law, and state education agency guidance.
• Experience at an EdTech company, education nonprofit, or state education agency.
• Experience working in or with state legislatures.
• Experience supporting sales or procurement processes.
• Prior experience leading or building a small team.
