Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Fintech)

Location: Remote UK; occasional in-person work at an Affirm office and in-person onboarding may be required.

Base pay: £120,000–£168,000 per year.

What you will do

• Own and deliver quarterly team goals while leading engineers through ambiguous, open-ended problems.
• Collaborate with product management, design, analytics, and engineering stakeholders on ideation, technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs.
• Identify and lead resolution of project, process, technology, and business issues.
• Build and monitor metrics, support availability, escalate incidents, and participate in on-call and operational work.
• Set and improve code review and design standards, and promote quality through writing and technical talks.
• Develop team talent through feedback, guidance, and technical leadership.

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python or Kotlin.
• Experience developing highly available distributed systems with technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components with elegant, simple, and extensible designs.
• Ability to write high-quality, understandable code and make significant changes safely in large codebases.
• Experience creating tools and practices that enable safe changes to large codebases.
• Proactive ownership of professional growth and feedback from teammates, managers, and stakeholders.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
