Senior Software Engineer – Payments (Fintech)

Location: Fully remote, must be based in Berlin, Germany; quarterly team gatherings in global offices. The role is also described as based in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Salary: €100,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate payment-domain services covering gateway integrations, payment intent, authorisation, capture, refunds, payout orchestration, and reconciliation.
• Implement marketplace capabilities including KYC onboarding, merchant configuration, settlement instructions, deductions, invoicing, and merchant-statement alignment.
• Build supportable flow-of-funds primitives such as idempotency, ledgers, events, and audit trails.
• Integrate PSP and partner tooling and support dispute, chargeback, fraud, and escalation workflows with Operations.
• Partner with Product, Legal/Compliance, Finance, and Support to deliver safe, testable production behaviour.
• Improve automated testing, canary releases, observability, incident response, design reviews, documentation, and engineering standards while mentoring engineers.

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering experience in distributed systems, including microservices, asynchronous processing, resilient APIs, and eventual consistency.
• Production experience with payment flows such as authorisation, capture, refunds, webhooks, and reconciliation.
• Experience with money-correctness patterns including idempotency keys, double-entry thinking, and auditability.
• Security experience covering PCI compliance, PII protection, secrets management, least privilege, and secure coding practices.
• Comfort working in an Azure-first environment with APIs, queues, eventing, and monitoring.
• Strong CI/CD and automated testing practices.
• Clear, confident communication with non-technical stakeholders during incidents, financial breaks, and compliance requests.

Nice to have

• Experience with sub-merchant, marketplace, or Payfac-like operating models, including KYC, underwriting, settlements, and fee deductions.
• Familiarity with dispute tooling, card-scheme rules, 3DS, risk rules, or fraud platforms.
