Staff Software Engineer, Billing & Payments (Healthcare)

Location: New York City; full-time hybrid position within the NYC office

Salary: $240,000–$280,000 base annually, plus equity, annual bonus, and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, design, delivery, and launch of a new billing platform.
• Define data models, backend services, GraphQL APIs, payment flows, reconciliation, and coexistence with the current billing system.
• Build across Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, React, and TypeScript within a production Rails monolith.
• Ensure correctness in financial workflows through testing, observability, auditability, and safe rollouts.
• Run design reviews, mentor engineers, and set technical direction.
• Partner with Product and Design to turn complex billing and payer requirements into shippable scope.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building and shipping production systems across the full stack.
• Strong expertise in Ruby, React, TypeScript, and GraphQL, plus backend services, APIs, and data models for complex, high-scale applications.
• Experience designing scalable architectures and solving technical problems spanning services, data layers, and user experiences.
• Strong focus on clean, maintainable code, reliability, correctness, testing, and observability for financial workflows.
• Ability to lead technical initiatives, guide architecture decisions, conduct design reviews, and mentor engineers.
• Ability to collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate complex requirements into well-designed systems and user experiences.
• Excitement about improving healthcare through technology and building infrastructure for care providers.

Hiring process
