Senior Backend Developer (AI Systems)

Location: Remote, Toronto

Base pay: $143k–$200k CAD/year, with potential additional bonus depending on the position offered.

What you will do

• Lead the architectural evolution of the core recommendations pipeline into a modern distributed architecture while maintaining production stability.
• Design, build, deploy, and operate scalable, fault-tolerant backend services for content selection, send-time optimization, subject line personalization, and frequency capping.
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, reliability risks, and scaling limitations.
• Collaborate with ML engineers and product stakeholders to translate requirements into rigorous technical designs and production implementations.
• Own key system components end-to-end, including monitoring and incident response.
• Champion system design, code quality, testing, observability, operational excellence, and engineer mentoring.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience focused on distributed systems.
• Deep experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems that are fault tolerant, highly available, and highly concurrent.
• Strong software engineering skills in system design, unit testing, Git, code review, and CI/CD.
• Strong foundation in Python.
• Experience with distributed data processing frameworks such as Apache Spark, Apache Flink, or Apache Beam.
• Practical understanding of consensus, partitioning, replication, back-pressure, idempotency, and failure handling.
• Experience with a cloud provider such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience with distributed and microservice technologies; the team uses Kubernetes, Kafka, and gRPC.
• Familiarity with software development lifecycle practices, continuous integration and delivery, and automated deployment using Docker, Kubernetes, and GitHub Actions.
• Strong technical leadership, collaboration, architectural decision-making, and mentoring skills.
• Exceptional problem-solving skills for identifying, analyzing, and resolving complex production issues.
• Willingness to continuously learn, adapt to evolving technologies, and pursue professional improvement.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with Apache Spark.
