Backend Engineer, Source Code: Repository Services (Ruby)

What you will do

• Design, implement, test, and ship backend features and improvements with minimal guidance using Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern backend languages.
• Build and maintain secure, observable, performant APIs, background jobs, integrations, bounded services, data models, migrations, indexes, and queries.
• Add and improve unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end test coverage and review code for correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and operational risk.
• Investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures; identify technical debt and propose practical improvements.
• Participate in on-call or operational support where required by the team’s ownership model.
• Use AI productively in daily engineering work, validating generated code and accounting for its limitations.

Requirements

• Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications, with strong programming, API, database, testing, debugging, and performance fundamentals.
• Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or another modern backend language, with the ability to learn and adapt beyond a single language.
• Ability to own features from problem clarification through delivery and follow-up, working independently while seeking input when appropriate.
• Sound judgment regarding security, reliability, performance, maintainability, operational risk, modular backend boundaries, and coupling.
• Strong written communication and effective collaboration in a remote, asynchronous environment.
• Practical experience with AI coding tools, including reviewing and correcting generated code.

Nice to have

• Production Go services, APIs, concurrency, profiling, or gRPC experience.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, or cloud deployment.
• Rust experience, particularly for systems, security, performance, or platform work.
• PostgreSQL, schema evolution, caching, queues, messaging, or event-driven workflow experience.
• Observability experience with metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerts.
• Experience contributing to a modular monolith, bounded context, shared component, or independently operated service.
