Backend Engineer (Node.js)

Location: Remote, global; work from anywhere in the world.

What you will do

• Develop and improve Supabase Storage across client libraries, CLI, CDN, storage servers, and deployment infrastructure.
• Improve analytics bucket capabilities and storage for open file formats such as Iceberg and DuckDB.
• Optimize asset delivery, uploads, caching, and edge-network performance for web and mobile applications.
• Improve storage-server performance, observability, reliability, APIs, client libraries, and CLI developer experience.
• Build a fast storage explorer with the frontend team and contribute to open-source server projects and upstream dependencies.
• Resolve escalated support issues and address systemic platform problems.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience running Node.js in production.
• Experience with highly scalable, distributed systems.
• Experience across backend application development and infrastructure work, including deploying, monitoring, and scaling services.
• Familiarity with observability tools including OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Grafana, plus performance tuning.
• Production-grade PostgreSQL experience, including tuning and troubleshooting.
• Ability to drive projects end to end with an ownership mentality and empathy for developer experience.

Nice to have

• Experience working on developer tools.
• Knowledge of AWS, GCP, or Azure and containerization with Docker or Kubernetes.
• Experience designing and operating large-scale file upload and download pipelines.
• Practical CDN integration and optimization experience.
• Experience with image and video processing tools such as Sharp, DSSIM, and FFmpeg, and formats or codecs including AVIF, WebM, and Brotli.
• Experience with the frontend ecosystem, including Next.js and React.
