Staff Software Engineer (AI/ML)

Base pay: $202,500–$274,000 annually in Mountain View

What you will do

• Own architecture for high-volume, highly available services with strict correctness, reliability, latency, and recovery requirements.
• Design event-driven and workflow-based distributed architectures using messaging, state machines, and sagas; lead capacity planning, performance, resiliency, observability, SLOs, and incident prevention.
• Design and ship agentic workflows that automate complex customer and operations tasks, including secure MCP or similar tool and API integrations for LLM assistants.
• Define authorization, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, policy enforcement, auditability, evaluation, testing, and monitoring for AI agents handling sensitive data.
• Partner with data science and Responsible AI to productionize prediction, anomaly detection, personalization, and safe LLM-based capabilities.
• Remain hands-on for roughly 60–80% of the role while leading technical specifications, design reviews, mentoring, production problem-solving, and cross-functional technical direction.

Requirements

• BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent work experience.
• 8+ years building systems and services for large-scale business environments, including Java and Spring Boot; full-stack React/JavaScript experience is a plus.
• 5+ years designing, building, and operating robust, highly scalable, highly available distributed systems, with the ability to explain system scale and architectural trade-offs.
• Strong command of consistency models, idempotency, concurrency, partitioning, caching, and failure handling.
• Practical experience with microservices and REST, GraphQL, Kafka, Kubernetes, and AWS.
• Strong database design experience with SQL databases including MySQL or PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases including DynamoDB or Cassandra.
• Hands-on experience shipping AI/ML-powered production features, including LLM applications with prompting, RAG, and tool or function calling.
• Experience designing agentic systems with multi-step workflows, orchestration, tool and API integration such as MCP, and guardrails; evaluating production AI systems through quality and safety metrics and model or agent iteration.
• Expertise in data structures, algorithms, software design, and architecture, plus strong leadership and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
• Comfort operating in ambiguity, entering new areas, and driving impact with a Discover-Implement-Ship-Measure-Learn mindset.

Nice to have

• Experience in fintech, payments, or other high-correctness, compliance-sensitive domains.
• Experience applying AI agents to operational workflows with measurable efficiency outcomes.
• Experience with Temporal, Step Functions, or similar workflow engines.
