Substation Design Engineer III

Location: Primarily remote, but candidates must be located near Johnston, Rhode Island, United States, with approximately five onsite site visits per year and additional travel as required.

Salary: $75–$80/hour, W2 contract for 24 months.

What you will do

• Serve as the Owner’s Engineer and technical lead for electric utility substation engineering projects.
• Coordinate internal design teams and external engineering contractors, schedules, resources, milestones, and deliverables.
• Review substation designs, drawings, specifications, completion checklists, and construction activities for technical accuracy, constructability, safety, and compliance.
• Conduct site walkdowns and provide engineering support for permitting, access, environmental, construction, and field issues.
• Prepare estimates, feasibility studies, bills of materials, technical reports, and estimation packages.
• Mentor junior engineers and support project management while managing multiple assignments and changing priorities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; Electrical Engineering preferred, with Mechanical or Civil Engineering also considered.
• At least 5 years of electric utility substation design experience, including transmission and distribution substations.
• Experience preparing bills of materials, estimates, feasibility studies, technical reports, and estimation packages.
• Ability to read, interpret, and review electrical engineering drawings.
• Working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and proficiency in AutoCAD and standard desktop applications.
• Strong technical, analytical, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, adapt to changing workloads, and work independently and collaboratively.
• Knowledge of safety policies, industrial hygiene practices, environmental hazards, and risk mitigation.
• Valid driver’s license, willingness to travel to job sites, and ability to obtain confined-space certification and safely access manholes and vaults.
• Must be able to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

Nice to have

• 10 years of substation design experience.
• At least 3 years of project management experience.
• Experience as an Owner’s Engineer or providing technical oversight of engineering and construction contractors.
• Experience evaluating engineering proposals, project costs, and design and construction activities.
