Backend Software Engineer (Java/Kotlin)

Location: Remote anywhere in Australia with good overlap with east-coast hours; Brisbane-based hybrid option with one or two office days per week.

What you will do

• Design, build, test, and ship backend services and APIs from ambiguous requirements through production.
• Work with Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, Postgres, RabbitMQ, and Redis across the core platform.
• Deploy to Kubernetes and AWS with GitHub Actions supporting delivery.
• Translate business requirements into technical solutions and collaborate with engineering, product, and business stakeholders.
• Write JUnit and Kotest tests, participate in code review, and maintain reliability, security, performance, architecture, and technical debt.

Requirements

• A few years of experience building backend services in Java or Kotlin.
• Comfort working with Spring and understanding its role in the application.
• Experience with relational databases and data modeling for effective querying.
• Clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders, including explaining trade-offs and listening effectively.
• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, including evaluating options and understanding underlying reasons.
• Ability to take ownership of problems through completion.

Nice to have

• Kotlin experience or willingness to learn it.
• Experience with Go or Terraform, including Terraform Provider development.
• Experience with ORMs such as Hibernate and judgment about when to use them.
• Knowledge of AWS, Azure, or GCP products and APIs.
• Interest in networking, including IP routing or MPLS.
