Senior/Staff AI Agent Engineer (Voice)

Location: New York City, United States; four days per week in the Flatiron office and one remote day, with flexibility when needed.

Salary: $225,000–$325,000 annual base salary plus meaningful early equity.

What you will do

• Analyze production conversations, calls, traces, and customer feedback to identify agent failure patterns and prioritize improvements.
• Define quality dimensions, evaluation datasets, human review processes, automated graders, and production metrics.
• Design reproducible experiments, compare approaches, and validate changes through offline evaluations and controlled production rollouts.
• Improve voice-agent turn-taking, interruptions, response latency, transcription, speech quality, and conversational naturalness.
• Implement, monitor, and maintain improvements while balancing quality, reliability, cost, and regressions.
• At Staff level, shape evaluation and experimentation strategy and raise the team’s ability to diagnose and improve agent behavior while remaining hands-on.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience improving substantial AI agent systems deployed to external customers, including the ability to explain system scale, identified problems, hypotheses, experiments, personal implementation work, and production outcomes.
• Strong experimental and analytical judgment, including defining baselines, designing comparisons, interpreting noisy or confounded results, and learning from unsuccessful hypotheses.
• Strong software engineering ability, including conversational-data analysis with code and SQL, complex agent debugging, and production implementation of experimental improvements.
• Practical understanding of how models, instructions, context, tools, and orchestration interact, including trade-offs between quality, latency, reliability, and cost.
• Ownership, clear communication, comfort with ambiguity, and effective collaboration with engineering and product teams.
• Desire to work in an early-stage startup with broad responsibility, rapid iteration, and high standards; effective use of AI programming tools is expected.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience improving production voice agents, including conversational timing, speech recognition and generation, audio quality, and end-to-end latency.
• Exceptional experience improving other customer-facing agents combined with strong judgment on voice problems and willingness to develop deeper voice expertise.
• Experience building simulation, replay, or evaluation tools for multi-turn agents.
• Experience developing human-review workflows or calibrating automated evaluations against human judgment.
• Experience at a strong startup or on a small team with substantial ownership.
