TL;DR
Mechatronics Engineer - Closures (Automotive): Developing electromechanical closure hardware for autonomous vehicles from requirements and concepts through supplier development, validation, and launch with an accent on actuators, motors, latches, sensing, and mechanism durability. Focus on analyzing fleet data, modeling system dynamics, defining control and fault-handling behavior, and building automated test benches and fixtures.
Location: Foster City, CA, United States; hybrid workplace.
Company
Zoox develops fully autonomous vehicles and the supporting ecosystem for mobility-as-a-service in urban environments.
What you will do
Own closures electromechanical hardware for new vehicle programs from requirements and concept through supplier development, validation, and launch.
Analyze fleet data and returned hardware with Python or MATLAB, identify and prioritize in-service issues, determine root causes, and drive corrective actions with firmware, controls, manufacturing, and supplier partners.
Define actuation behavior with firmware partners, including control strategy, fault detection and handling, and mechanism durability.
Model system dynamics to define requirements for motors, actuators, gear trains, duty cycles, and load cases.
Build benches, fixtures, and test automation to verify closure systems.
Requirements
BS in mechanical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, or a related field, plus at least 3 years of professional experience.
Experience developing electromechanical hardware such as latches, actuators, or other motor-driven mechanisms, including work with technical suppliers.
Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for data analysis, visualization, and system modeling.
Experience with 3D CAD software, preferably CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE.
Working knowledge of Design for Manufacturability, including GD&T and dimensional engineering.
Ability to debug across mechanical, electrical, and software boundaries.
Nice to have
Passion for multidisciplinary engineering, ideally demonstrated through personal hobbies or projects.
Experience with automotive closures such as doors, liftgates, trunks, drop glass, or charge port mechanisms.
Experience with closed-loop control systems, Simulink, or similar modeling software.
Experience taking hardware from prototype through production, including launch support.
Electronics fundamentals and embedded experience with ECUs, C/C++, or PCB layout; ability to debug Ethernet, CAN, UART, LIN, I2C, or SPI interfaces.
Experience using vehicle fleet data, logs, or telemetry for issue prioritization and root-cause analysis.
Familiarity with 8D, DFMEA, PFMEA, and formal problem-solving methodologies.
Culture & Benefits
Full-time hybrid position within the Vehicle Development – Body, Closures and Chassis department.
Benefits include paid sick leave, vacation, bereavement leave, unpaid time off, health insurance, long-term care insurance, disability insurance, and life insurance.
Compensation may include base salary, Amazon RSUs, Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights, and a possible sign-on bonus.
