Engineering Manager, Orchestration

Location: Remote; hirify.global - Toronto

Base pay: $152K–$200K CAD per year, plus possible bonus and benefits.

What you will do

• Recruit, mentor, and grow the founding engineering team for the orchestration platform.
• Partner with the Lead Engineer and senior technical stakeholders to define architecture, scope, milestones, and the path from prototype to production.
• Drive initiatives from concept to delivery and translate product goals into clear technical plans.
• Lead development of a scalable, event-driven, fault-tolerant platform processing high-volume real-time messaging decisions across workflows and channels.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership for distributed, stateful, and real-time decisioning systems.
• Drive observability, metrics, incident response, and shared on-call practices for business-critical services while collaborating with Product, Machine Learning, Data Platform, and adjacent engineering teams.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing engineers, with experience recruiting, mentoring, and growing high-trust engineering teams.
• Player-coach leadership style with the ability to contribute to architecture, design, and implementation.
• Deep experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems that are fault tolerant, highly available, and highly concurrent.
• Strong systems thinking and architectural judgment for event-driven, stateful, and real-time decisioning systems.
• Experience building and operating backend services in a modern cloud environment; the platform uses Google Cloud Platform.
• Hands-on experience with microservice and service-oriented architectures, including synchronous, event-sourced, orchestrated, and asynchronous inter-service communication; the platform uses gRPC and Kafka.
• Strong foundation in Python.
• Practical experience with partitioning, replication, back-pressure, idempotency, and failure handling in distributed systems.
• Strong software engineering practices including system design, code review, testing, CI/CD, observability, incident response, and healthy on-call practices; clear communication with product and business stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience with Elixir; experience with Erlang, Scala/Akka, Go, or Clojure is also transferable.
• Experience with workflow orchestration systems such as Prefect, Airflow, Dagster, or Temporal.
• Experience building, operating, or integrating with ML-driven decisioning or scoring systems.
