Senior Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States; the candidate must be based in Chicago, and relocation assistance is not available.

Salary: $112,710.00–$183,140.00 per year.

What you will do

• Design and develop enterprise-scale REST APIs and microservices with Java, Spring Boot, and AWS.
• Build API-first solutions, including service contracts, payload schemas, and OpenAPI/Swagger specifications.
• Implement secure, scalable integrations using OAuth 2.0, JWT, and enterprise authorization models.
• Translate business requirements into technical designs, user stories, and implementation plans while contributing to architecture decisions and code reviews.
• Collaborate with product owners, UI teams, architects, and partner teams to deliver customer-focused software.
• Drive automated and performance testing, deployment, monitoring, production support, documentation, and mentoring of junior and mid-level engineers.

Requirements

• Knowledge of software development tools and activities, with the ability to produce software products or systems aligned with product requirements.
• Knowledge of software product design and the ability to convert market requirements into product designs.
• Strong decision-making, critical-thinking, and communication skills.
• Extensive experience developing RESTful APIs and microservices with Java 21+ and Spring Boot, including API management platforms such as Apigee.
• Experience designing, deploying, and operating applications in public cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• End-to-end software lifecycle experience, including unit, integration, and end-to-end automated testing with tools such as JUnit and Mockito.
• Experience designing and implementing event-driven architectures with message-streaming solutions such as Kinesis, SQS, SNS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, or Azure Event Hub.
• Strong knowledge of relational, NoSQL, caching, search, and vector database technologies, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Aurora, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, and Redis.
• Hands-on experience maintaining CI/CD pipelines with Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GoCD, or similar tools.
• Demonstrated success working in an Agile development framework, ideally Scrum.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with AI-assisted coding companions such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor.
