Staff Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; onsite at the Crossman Service Building home office.

Salary: $143,000–$286,000 per year, plus performance-based bonuses and possible stock compensation.

What you will do

• Develop large-scale backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, and Kafka.
• Build and maintain critical cart systems supporting billions of transactions annually, sub-second response times, and 99.99% uptime.
• Participate in code reviews, debugging, technical documentation, and improvements to development processes and standards.
• Design and implement maintainable, modular, and testable software, including unit, functional, and integration tests.
• Contribute to planning and execution of technical projects and collaborate with product and design teams.
• Investigate innovative solutions for complex mobile and omnichannel commerce challenges.

Requirements

• 7–10+ years of hands-on experience building Java-based backend systems, including cloud-based solutions.
• Proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, and Kafka.
• Experience delivering highly scalable, large-scale data-processing Java applications.
• Strong high-level and low-level system design skills, including data-intensive applications and open-stack technologies.
• Understanding of computer science fundamentals, microservices, data structures, algorithms, and problem solving.
• Experience with CI/CD development environments and tools including Git, Maven, and Jenkins.
• Experience writing modular and testable code and test cases using JUnit, Mockito, and Mock MVC.
• Experience with microservices architecture, distributed concepts, design principles, design patterns, and cloud-native development.
• Hands-on experience with Spring Boot, concurrency, garbage collection, RESTful services, data caching services, and ORM tools; strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
• Minimum qualification: a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area plus 4 years of software engineering experience, or 6 years of software engineering experience without the degree requirement.

• Master's degree in computer science or a related field plus 3 years of software engineering experience.
