Staff Software Engineer - Backend (Java)

Location: Moon Pie Building AR Bentonville Home Office, Bentonville, Arkansas, United States; onsite role

Annual salary: $110,000–$220,000, plus performance bonuses and possible stock compensation

What you will do

• Lead architecture for the International Supply Chain Backend team and author Architecture Decision Records and design documents for the WMS platform.
• Represent WMS in cross-organizational architecture forums and align with cloud infrastructure and data platform teams.
• Design and build scalable, high-throughput, low-latency microservices using domain-driven design, Kafka-based event-driven patterns, and API-first principles.
• Implement observability through structured logging, distributed tracing, dashboards, and alerts.
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through reviews, pairing, and structured feedback on designs and pull requests.
• Lead latency reduction, incident retrospectives, and platform reliability initiatives.

Requirements

• Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area and 4 years of experience in software engineering or a related area; or Option 2: 6 years of experience in software engineering or a related area.
• 12+ years of relevant experience building cloud-based, highly resilient, and scalable systems.
• Strong knowledge of object-oriented programming and frameworks, including Java 17/21, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, and Kafka.
• Expert understanding of software fundamentals, data structures, algorithms, problem solving, and Agile principles.
• Advanced exposure to cloud infrastructure such as Azure, GCP, or AWS, and containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Ability to troubleshoot issues quickly and provide technical solutions.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including negotiation, facilitation, and consensus building.

Nice to have

• Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related area with 2 years of experience in software engineering or a related area.
• Experience creating inclusive digital experiences and implementing WCAG 2.2 AA standards and assistive technologies.
• Knowledge of digital accessibility best practices and Walmart accessibility standards.
