Senior Backend Engineer (Healthcare)

Location: Fully remote within the continental United States; San Antonio, TX listed as the remote location. U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Government/Public Trust clearance are required.

What you will do

• Design and develop backend services, REST APIs, enterprise integrations, and service-layer business logic for mission-critical healthcare applications.
• Lead technical implementation, system design, code reviews, technical documentation, estimation, and release planning.
• Improve application performance, monitoring, logging, observability, reliability, security, and operational resilience.
• Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, remediate defects, and support multiple environments.
• Collaborate with architects, product owners, QA, DevSecOps, and cross-functional Agile teams.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to refactoring, reusable components, technical debt reduction, and release commitments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field; equivalent experience may be considered.
• At least 8 years of experience in backend engineering, enterprise application development, or software engineering.
• Strong hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, RESTful API development, and service-oriented or microservices architectures.
• Experience with SQL, relational database design, backend data integration patterns, CI/CD pipelines, Git-based workflows, and production support operations.
• Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, secure application development, and enterprise security practices.
• Proven ability to lead technical implementation efforts and mentor less-experienced developers within Agile teams.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, system design, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working in Agile software delivery environments and collaborating across cross-functional technical teams.
• U.S. citizenship, successful completion of a background check, and ability to obtain and maintain a Government/Public Trust clearance, including fingerprinting when required.

Nice to have

• Experience supporting federal healthcare programs, Department of Veterans Affairs initiatives, or regulated technology delivery environments.
• Familiarity with InterSystems IRIS, FHIR APIs, healthcare interoperability workflows, or healthcare integration platforms.
• Experience with containerized deployments, AWS cloud services, platform modernization, or high-availability and high-volume enterprise systems.
• Relevant cloud, Agile, or software development certifications.
