Senior Software Engineer, Performance (Toronto)

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada; hybrid role with an in-person onboarding experience.

Annual base salary for candidates located in Canada: CAD 136,000–187,000, plus equity where applicable, bonus, and benefits.

What you will do

• Design and implement backend frameworks for rate limiting, traffic shaping, concurrency control, and query timeout enforcement.
• Monitor latency, throughput, and resource utilization across database, application, cache, and edge layers; build metrics, dashboards, alerts, and automation.
• Analyze JVM, SQL, Hibernate, and end-to-end scalability bottlenecks and drive fixes in code, queries, and configuration.
• Perform capacity and cost-efficiency analysis, participate in metrics reviews, and support large-customer onboarding and high-traffic events.
• Advise engineering teams on scalable feature design, review code and SQL changes, and integrate AI-driven developer tooling and diagnostics.
• Write unit and functional tests, participate in design and code reviews, and join on-call rotations for latency, scale, and production incidents.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software development experience with strong Java or similar-language skills.
• Solid understanding of JVM internals, garbage collection, and concurrency.
• Strong relational database experience, preferably MySQL and Hibernate, including query optimization, indexing, execution-plan analysis, and schema design.
• Experience diagnosing and resolving latency, throughput, and scaling bottlenecks in high-availability, multi-tenant SaaS environments.
• Hands-on experience with profiling and observability tools such as Java Flight Recorder, async-profiler, thread and heap dump analysis, Datadog, Splunk, or Prometheus/Grafana.
• Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure, with AWS preferred or GCP/Azure, and modern container ecosystems including Docker and Kubernetes.
