Principal Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in the United States; listed locations include Morrisville, North Carolina, and San Jose, California. Most roles include some level of in-office and/or in-person expectations.

Target salary range: $227,800–$338,800 per year; final compensation depends on location, qualifications, experience, and education.

What you will do

• Serve as technical architect or tech lead for major AI BU initiatives and own system design end to end.
• Set technical direction and design standards across multiple engineering teams.
• Drive ambiguous, cross-cutting technical problems and author design documents and RFCs.
• Write production code, review high-stakes designs and pull requests, and unblock difficult engineering problems.
• Translate business priorities into technical roadmaps and architecture decisions with engineering and product leadership.
• Mentor engineers, identify systemic technical risks, represent engineering in executive reviews, and advance system design, testing, observability, and operational excellence.

Requirements

• 12+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, including designing and building large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience as a technical lead or architect for multi-team or organization-wide initiatives, with the ability to build consensus and influence direction without formal authority.
• Deep hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Experience with agentic engineering using local and/or frontier models, distributed storage systems, data processing, analytics, and AI/ML systems.
• Strong system design skills and direct ownership of architecture for highly available, low-latency, large-scale services.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including authoring design documents/RFCs and presenting technical trade-offs to engineers and executives.
• Track record of mentoring engineers and raising technical quality across teams.
• Prior experience building CI/CD infrastructure for large-scale deployments.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; a Master’s degree is preferred.

• Domain expertise in knowledge graphs, semantics, and data modeling.
• Hands-on experience with distributed database systems.
• Hands-on experience training and deploying AI models.
• Hands-on experience with GPU workloads and accelerated computing infrastructure.
