Director of Engineering (Care)

Location: US - Remote; compensation range applies to US-based candidates, with location-specific ranges available for candidates outside the US.

Salary: $230,000–$280,000 annually for US-based candidates, plus potential equity.

What you will do

• Own the technical vision, architecture, and delivery for Care, including intake, consultations, clinician workflows, prescribing, care-team and support tooling, and pharmacy handoff.
• Define and deliver engineering roadmaps with product and design while balancing innovation, reliability, scalability, and quality.
• Lead the transition to durable domain models with clear boundaries, APIs, and published events instead of direct cross-domain database access.
• Ensure clinical systems meet patient-safety, security, privacy, HIPAA, auditability, and state and federal regulatory requirements, including controlled-substance prescribing.
• Set reliability standards for patient-critical flows and lead AI-assisted development, review, and spec-driven engineering workflows.
• Build and mentor engineering managers and technical leaders; own hiring, headcount planning, succession planning, team structure, and executive-level engineering communication.

Requirements

• 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years managing managers or multiple teams in high-growth environments.
• Experience building and operating systems handling clinical or other regulated health data, with working knowledge of HIPAA and compliance-driven design.
• Experience owning end-to-end user experiences with cross-functional product engineering teams.
• Strong grounding in Spring Boot, Kotlin, and PostgreSQL, with the judgment to guide detailed design decisions.
• Experience integrating third-party health and pharmacy systems, including labs, e-prescribing networks, and pharmacy platforms.
• Ability to define and execute technical roadmaps connected to product vision and business outcomes.
• Strong communication skills and executive presence across technical, clinical, and business stakeholders.
• Ability to recruit, develop, and retain high-performing engineering talent.
• Comfort making risk trade-offs where patient safety and speed conflict.
