Director of Platform Engineering (AI)

Location: New York or San Francisco; hybrid work with in-office attendance two days per week.

Salary: $340,000–$425,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Lead and grow multiple Platform and Infrastructure Engineering teams covering backend services, APIs, developer platforms, reliability foundations, and AI enablement.
• Own the technical strategy and roadmap for scaling the platform as usage, content, and integrations grow.
• Drive initiatives focused on backend services, APIs, availability, performance, scalability, and capacity planning.
• Partner with Product, Security, Data, and Product Engineering leaders to improve platform reliability and developer productivity.
• Establish operational excellence through on-call practices, incident response, SLAs, and SLOs.
• Hire, develop, and mentor senior engineering managers and technical leaders while communicating risks, tradeoffs, and investments to executives and cross-functional partners.

Requirements

• 10+ years of engineering experience and 5+ years of engineering management experience.
• Experience leading platform, infrastructure, or foundational backend teams.
• Proven experience scaling a consumer product, UGC platform, or marketplace to millions of users.
• Strong background in distributed systems, APIs, and service-oriented architectures.
• Experience operating production systems with high availability and performance requirements.

Nice to have

• Background in developer platforms, internal tooling, or platform abstractions.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP, data pipelines, and event-driven systems.
• Experience leading through major architectural transitions or scale inflection points.
