Director of Engineering, Data (AI)

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with hybrid work schedules; hubs are also available in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Raleigh. Applicants may be based across the U.S. where employment is supported, excluding Alaska, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Salary: $176,000–$235,000 base salary per year, plus annual bonus and meaningful equity.

What you will do

• Own the end-to-end data platform and architecture, including ingestion, transformation, orchestration, machine learning, and streaming strategies.
• Build scalable customer and partner data onboarding capabilities to accelerate reliable data integration and time to first value.
• Operate production-grade data systems with monitoring, alerting, SLAs, incident response, lineage, freshness standards, and clear dataset ownership.
• Create the data foundation for AI and ML products, including training, inference, feature infrastructure, and reliable documented inputs.
• Establish practical governance covering access controls, data classification, audit trails, PII handling, and data contracts.
• Hire, develop, and lead the data engineering team while establishing planning, on-call, and stakeholder intake processes.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in data or software engineering.
• Experience building and scaling teams of 10+ engineers, including hiring, developing leaders, and leading through managers and individual contributors.
• Hands-on experience with modern data platforms, including Snowflake or Databricks, dbt, ELT patterns, Airflow or similar orchestration tools, and Kafka or Kinesis; AWS experience is strongly preferred.
• Direct experience building data systems for production ML use cases, including feature stores, training data, real-time inference, and build-versus-buy decisions for ML platforms.
• Experience applying operational excellence to data systems through monitoring, SLAs, incident response, and data quality practices.
• Experience delivering customer-facing reporting, analytics, or API products in B2B SaaS environments where performance, reliability, and trust are important.
• Strong architectural judgment, including designing for change and sequencing investments behind validated needs.
• Pragmatic governance experience covering security, compliance, documentation, data contracts, access models, and self-service.
• Comfort with ambiguity and greenfield work, shipping MVPs, debugging issues, writing code, and carrying operational responsibility while maintaining a multi-year vision.
• Ability to influence Product, Engineering, GTM, Finance, and executive stakeholders; communicate clearly and translate technical decisions into business impact.

Nice to have

• Early-stage or scale-up experience in Series B through D companies.
• Experience in vertical SaaS or construction technology.
