Docs Team Lead (Fintech)

What you will do

• Manage and mentor two technical writers, run 1:1s and team rituals, develop careers, clarify ownership, and protect the team from burnout.
• Own the developer and product documentation direction, including the embedded payments API reference across Pay In, Pay Out, and Pay Ops.
• Maintain the multi-file OpenAPI 3.1 source, information architecture, docs CI/CD, style guide, and linting rules.
• Triage engineering and product work into prioritized documentation tickets, delegate work, coordinate monthly production-release documentation, and manage SLAs and release tiers.
• Own the public agent skills plugin, internal agent instructions and tooling, and AI-assisted documentation workflows with human review gates.
• Publish monthly State of the Docs reports and track team velocity, post-release documentation work, and AI answer coverage.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in technical writing or developer documentation, including real API reference experience.
• Experience leading or mentoring technical writers.
• Deep OpenAPI experience and docs-as-code workflows using Git, pull requests, CI, Markdown, and MDX.
• Ability to read API responses, write scripts in TypeScript or Python, and build docOps tools.
• Hands-on experience using AI coding agents in a documentation workflow, with judgment about where they fail.
• Strong verification habits and the ability to state when information is not yet known instead of guessing.
• Clear written communication and an async-first working style.

Nice to have

• Payments or fintech experience, including card processing, ACH, payouts, or merchant onboarding.
• Experience with Fern or a similar documentation and SDK platform.
• A portfolio showing API documentation written and documentation tooling built.
• A portfolio website is strongly preferred.
